How do you streamline a business in order to survive a downturn in your sales?

One of the hardest is Employee related decisions which are usually one of the largest expenses in any business. Most businesses here in the Texas are currently evaluating all aspects of Employee cost. Arlington, Fort Worth, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin and all the other cities in Texas are seeing employee benefits go down and unemployment go up.

When you have to make tough choices remember the smaller your company, the more your employees are the Face of your business. They are the ones that greet your customers, wait on your customers, visit and spend time with your customers. While the Hostess might be the lowest paid person on your payroll they are the first face and voice your customers see and hear when they enter your business. Take time to train your employees for the job you have them doing. The right person, trained properly in the right job is invaluable to your business. Put some time and thought into your decisions.
  1. Can you cut back on staff without harming your clientele?
  2. Cross train so that you don’t need two employees working when there is only enough business to support one.
  3. Consider split shifts to have maximum staff at peak times and minimum staff during slow times.
  4. Arrange employee schedules to eliminate overtime.
  5. No one works better when they are tired. Two employees working 5 hour shifts are more productive than 1 employee working a 10 hour shift.
  6. Evaluate your employees by profitability to the business. Reward the ones that make you money with non monetary perks such as more work, better shifts, a private parking spot etc.
  7. Evaluate your employees in the overall scheme of your business. Maybe they are good at what you have them doing but are they hurting you for example by making everyone around them less productive?
Once you have identified the areas you can change incorporate your employees into the process. Have private as well as group discussions to cover all the details and calm unnecessary worries. If your employees recognize they are a valuable part of your business they will help you to overcome the challenges we all are facing right now.
